What We Do

Pet owners are often reported as saying that their dog brings far more than just an excuse for a walk in the park. Many people find that their dog brings huge emotional and physical benefits, improving their fitness, relieving stress and helping as a social icebreaker.

The evidence goes beyond just anecdotes, with research finding that dogs really do bring many positive benefits to our lives. For people with disabilities that effect can be much greater.

Animals Deserve Better, Inc.,  is a pioneering charity that trains service assistance dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities. Through practical tasks our dogs offer freedom and independence, but in addition a service assistance dog becomes a reason to go out, giving a new found confidence that opens doors to fresh opportunities including friendships, hobbies, education and even careers.  We also train therapy dogs offering unconditional love and understanding for those who are in hospital or in physical /occupational therapy.  We all could use a friendly paw to hold onto to help us make it through.

The partnerships we create between people with disabilities and dogs are life-changing.

our dogs

Our dogs are destined for a very important role – to help a person with disabilities become more independent, or for a family with a child with autism to no longer feel socially isolated. To help support mentally, physically and emotionally our needs, by being independent in thought and to know when to disobey a direct command. Knowing when all we need to make our day complete is a cold nose, warm heart and unconditional love, which has the power to take away all the aches, pains and stress that each day brings and allows us to start all over again, fresh and revitalized to go on.

Our puppies or adults are very carefully chosen and they go through a thorough socialization program with their new families to help them become well adjusted.  We place our dogs with their selected family or person right from the start.  We believe that this initial bonding will help form a better relationship.

Our trainers work individually and as a group with each of our dogs and their new family or person, teaching them both together, helping imprint that bond which will enable each to build confidence and learn the necessary skills.

What Is a Service Dog and How Many Types of Service Dogs are There?

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990), a dog is considered a "service dog" if it has been "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability." Also according to the ADA, a 'disability' is a "mental or physical condition which substantially limits a major life activity" such as:

•  caring for one's self •  performing manual tasks •  walking •  seeing •  hearing •  speaking •  breathing •  learning •  working •  as well as some disabilities that may not be visible, such as: deafness epilepsy psychiatric conditions

To be considered a service dog/animal, the dog/animal must be trained to perform tasks directly related to the person's disability.

The Coolest Canines

Dogs are man’s best friend, they’ve been part of our lives for generations and have helped humans in countless ways. But we think it’s fair to say, that our dogs do some of the coolest things.

Here are the top ten cleverest things a Paws for Life service assistance dog can be trained to do.

They can pick up really difficult to reach things such as a phone, keys or a wallet. Some can even pick up a credit card!

Our dogs help people to get dressed and undressed, they even tackle zips!

They collect the post rather than attack the postman!

They load and unload the washing machine. (Yes, really!)

They can open doors

They can interrupt a child’s tantrum

They can stop a child from running into the road

They can play games

They can speak – although their conversation is a little limited!

They can press the button on a pedestrian crossing

We Offer years of training, dogs and their handlers

We use our facility to teach the majority of our dogs the necessary obedience and limited agility work that is required.  We use the group lessons to help the dogs integrate with other dogs and people which helps them in every day situations. We also work in various locations around the city. Our service, assistance and therapy training is customized to each individual. We teach your dog everything that your lifestyle may need from swimming to climbing. Your dog is your lifeline.

There are over 84 million people or approximately 20% of our population in the United States that are mentally and/or physically handicapped and those numbers continue to grow significantly each year. It is estimated that with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that there is an additional 25% to 30% increase in PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). There are over 11 million people who require assistance with one or more daily activities such as walking, picking up dropped items, answering the phone, etc. Roughly 12 million others require a wheelchair or some other ambulatory equipment such as a cane, walker or crutches. The assistance these disabled people require not only strips them of their individual freedoms and quality of life, but also, often creates an enormous burden on the caregivers and community.

We offer specialized/custom dog training so that we can bring dignity and independence to many disabled people through the use of our specially trained service dogs. We are prepared to improve the lives of special needs individuals everywhere in the nation. We are not sponsored and rely totally on donations from the general public and our adoptions to help keep the fees as low as possible .

We do offer to train your own dog both for service and therapy but they must qualify to be accepted into our program, we do personality, behaviour and ability evaluations.

There are fees associated with our programs, all are tax deductible.
